The ideal European is a medium to large, shorthaired, robust and supple cat. The breed has developed by itself and has therefore no extreme features. The frame of this cat is perhaps the most common one, as it is the natural shorthaired of Europe.
The head is of larger size with a face that looks rounded, but is a little longer than it is broad. The skull and forehead is slightly rounded, the chin is firm. The nose is medium long and straight and has a shallow indentation between the eyes. The head is carried on a medium long and muscular neck.
The ears are medium in size, set well apart and comparatively upright. The height of the ears corresponds to the width of the base.
Eyes are round and open, set with width between and slightly oblique. The colour is green, amber, blue or odd-eyed, depending on coat colour and pattern.
The body is robust, strong and muscular. Round and well developed chest. The legs are strong and sturdy, of medium length and with firm, round paws.
The tail is medium long, rather thick at base and gradually tapering to a rounded tip.
The coat of the European is short, dense and glossy. The structure is springy, it is neither soft nor woolly.
The European comes in natural colours and patterns, some of them also in combination with white. There should be nothing related to cross breeding.
